Friday Reflections: Purpose and Presence

As you know, I spend a lot of time reflecting on purpose and have written before on Shaw’s lines, “This is the true joy in life, Being use for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.” After a meditation this week, I picked up a Michael Signer card that said “Enthusiasm, Joy, Love: If you have these going on all the time on the inside, who cares what is happening outside?” So true! On vacation with my family in NM for two weeks, I have felt so much joy, love and enthusiasm! I have made many connections with family and friends this week back at home as well including being over at a friend’s house last night. They have a sign in the living room reading “The most important work you will ever do is in these walls.” I whole-heartedly believe that. There can be a big purpose outside the family that drives us, a purpose bigger than ourselves. Recently, much happiness research shows the importance of having meaningful work, but it must come after faith, family and friends. While I will continue looking to see what meaningful work I can do outside the home, it will always be second to taking care of my family, myself, my relationships, and my faith. My focus on this for the last three years, my pure presence, has borne fruit in the great love and times I have had with my family and friends this year. If you have a calling, a career, that you LOVE and every minute of doing it is joy and enthusiasm, make sure you are still taking care of your spirit, your family, and friends as well. Make sure you bring your full presence there as well.

Speaking of family and friends, happy Father’s Day to all you fathers out there. It is a great weekend to pour into your families, your father and your children, and let them pour into you and feel celebrated. Fathers, your most important job is being a dad. Alex, my oldest son, whom it has been a very rocky road with for the first 19 years, told a friend recently that he has not changed so much in the last few years, but I have. Actually, we both have changed tremendously, but it is my change that made it safe for him to grow. Keep being great dads!

Have a great weekend!
